Ransomware Payments Are Up, Google is Squeezing Bad Android Developers, And More.

According to researchers at Chainalysis, Ransomware gangs have raked in almost $450 Million in the first half of 2023. If this trend continues, researchers believe 2023 will be the second biggest year for ransomware, behind 2021, which saw $940 million in cryptocurrency go to gang-controlled IP Addresses. The gangs have increased their attacks at larger organizations as well as continuing to aim at smaller ones.

Another thing to note is that Google is cracking down on bad actors planting malicious Android applications into Google's Play Store. Starting August 31st, anyone creating a Play Console Developer account will have to prove their authenticity by providing a 9-digit unique identifier assigned by Dunn & Bradstreet. This identifier, known as a D-U-N-S number, will allow Google to confirm the developer's trustworthiness.

Lastly, This past Thursday the White House made an announcement for an implementation plan for the U.S. National Cybersecurity Strategy. The announcement contained timelines for federal agencies to adhere to. One in particular that aims at the Office of the National Cyber Director requires the creation of a National Cyber Workforce and Education Strategy by early 2024. Be on the lookout.
