NCCI Annual Insights Symposium 2024: A Beginner’s Perspective

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) Annual Insights Symposium for the first time in my hometown of Orlando, Florida. It was an eye-opening experience for me that offered a wealth of general insight and a glimpse into the future of the workers' compensation industry. Here's a summary of the key findings and my overall impressions of the event.

Key Findings

1. State of the Line Report: Donna Glenn, Chief Actuary at NCCI, provided an in-depth analysis of financial indicators, market conditions, and economic trends in the workers' compensation system. This report was a comprehensive review of the industry's current status and future outlook, and it was so fun to hear such a knowledgable individual speak! The 2023 Calendar Year combined ratio for the Workers Compensation Industry was revealed as *drumroll please* an 86%, indicating underwriting profitability for a decade and counting.

2. AI in Insurance: Jeffery A. Williams from Microsoft highlighted how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the insurance industry. He discussed AI's potential to transform business processes, enhance innovation, and improve overall efficiency. As an an avid follower of all things AI, I appreciated Jeffery’s discussion, and I look forward to seeing how the industry shifts more and more with the tides of tech.

3. Medical Cost Trends: Raji H. Chadarevian and Jon Sinclair from NCCI explored the evolving landscape of medical costs in workers' compensation. They discussed the shift from opioid dependence to alternative pain management methods and the impact of these trends on medical expenses, as well as the curious decline in frequency of surgeries and in-patient hospital stays.

4. Future of Workplace Safety Technology: A panel moderated by Damian D. England delved into the latest advancements in wearable technology, computer vision software, and data analytics. The discussion focused on how these technologies are enhancing worker safety and productivity.

5. The Science of Happiness: Harvard Professor Arthur C. Brooks delivered an inspiring keynote on the science of happiness. He shared evidence-based strategies for improving relationships, increasing productivity, and achieving greater overall happiness. I thought the inclusion of this keynote was a fun twist applicable to all industries, and all the folks I met at the conference already seemed to be heeding Dr. Brooks’ advice!

6. Economic Impact on Workers Compensation: Stephen Cooper, Senior Economist at NCCI, provided an insightful analysis of recent economic developments and their implications for workers' compensation. He examined how changes in the economy are influencing premium rates, claim frequency, and severity on a large scale.

General Atmosphere

The atmosphere at the NCCI convention was dynamic and engaging. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the energy and enthusiasm of the attendees. The event was well-organized, with a mix of informative sessions, networking opportunities, and spectacular food.

One of the standout aspects was the sense of community. Despite the scale of participants, I felt a shared commitment to advancing the workers' compensation industry as a eholw. Conversations flowed easily, and it was clear that everyone was eager to learn, share, and grow, even with a newer addition to the party such as myself.

The keynote speakers were particularly impressive, bringing a mix of expertise, insight, and inspiration to the stage. Their presentations set the tone for the convention, sparking thoughtful discussions and providing valuable takeaways.

Overall, my first NCCI convention was an enriching experience. I left with a deeper understanding of the industry's trends and future direction, along with new connections and ideas to explore. I look forward to next year's event and continuing to engage with this vibrant community.
