ChatGPT: US lawyer admits using AI for case research (BBC News)

Ugh.  Predictable, but sad. 

Laziness and incompetency as a professional for certain.

Can anyone truly believe that an algorithm which scans an extremely broad band of data can be succinct in the proper determination of case law and its impact on one’s legal rights? 

I see this being discussed by insurance professionals and all I can think is, “really man?”.  I know I’m the type that prints things and writes in ink on them with perhaps a coffee stain or three, but do we really believe that this is the way of the future?

I’m holding out that institutional knowledge, proper listening and passion to be the bast at your profession with always outweigh “tools” such as this -

A New York lawyer is facing a court hearing of his own after his firm used AI tool ChatGPT for legal research.

A judge said the court was faced with an "unprecedented circumstance" after a filing was found to reference example legal cases that did not exist.

The lawyer who used the tool told the court he was "unaware that its content could be false".

ChatGPT creates original text on request, but comes with warnings it can "produce inaccurate information".
